A place of simple pleasures...

A recreational paradise, more than a third of Sullivan County is dedicated to state parks, forestry, fish and game lands. The 60-mile Loyalsock Trail transverses its rugged, mountainous, largely undeveloped terrain. Sullivan County is one of three places in northeastern United States the Federal Government considers entirely rural. The mountains support a large variety of unusual habitats, including mountain-top bogs and alpine slopes, where rare plants and a variety of wildlife thrive. Year-round residents (population of 6,550 +/- including kids and maybe dogs) cluster in villages, small towns and farms. The county has two well-known resort communities: Eagles Mere and Laporte. The nearest movie theaters and shopping malls are 30+miles away. But local Mom & Pop stores, specialty shops and unique entertainment opportunities thrive. Coffeehouses support a growing number of local singer/songwriters. A Folk Festival, Pow-wow, County Fair, Fall Festival, crafts shows and other activities are hosted at the County Fairgrounds in Forksville. In the dead of winter a mile-long toboggan slide is constructed from lake ice in Eagles Mere. A 50-mile sled dog race draws teams from two countries. A horse-drawn sleigh rally is one of only a few nationwide. This is a place where light crossing the face of the mountains can be a significant event in a day. A shaft of sunlight caressing a live birch tree, a raven on the wing overhead... The
past echoes here. Come explore what America once was. Discover your
roots. |
